Birmingham City Council pays an annual sum to Ordnance Survey . To cover this
each council department's budget is "top-sliced" ( libraries are part of
Leisure and Culture, which pays c. 9% of the total). As part of the service
provided to each department by the council's mapping and survey section,
Birmingham Central Library receives print-outs of amended tiles, corresponding
to traditional 1:1250 or 1:2500 sheets as appropriate, 3 times a year (twice at
the 15 revision point level and once for any amendment at all). This produces
about 250 sheets a year, out of a total coverage of c. 1200 sheets. Because of
the top-slicing arrangement the cost of these copies is charged to Leisure and
Community Services in general, and not to the Local Studies and History Service,
or even to libraries. There is no restriction on viewing these printouts, which
we treat in the same way as the printed maps which preceded them; all
photocopying of maps in copyright is done by library staff, subject to the O.S.
fair dealing limits.
We are only just making the first tentative enquiries towards having the current
mapping available through Birmingham City Council's intranet, although there may
be copyright complications if members of the public have access to it on
unsupervised terminals, or staffing implications if it can only be made
available on supervised terminals. The recently-circulated Siteplan offer from
Latitude also looks worthy of further investigation (email

Here at Derby Local Studies Library we are wanting to update our 1:1250 and
1:2500 OS maps collection. However we are seemingly being told that now
they are digitised we would have to buy them from an agent at £55 a sheet.
Covering just Derby would be almost impossible, let alone the county which
we have also bought in the past. Using the council planning department's
GIS system has been suggested but they have told us that we would have to
supervise customers when they used it. Also this does not prevent the
ending of a 120 year collection of these scale maps either.
Has anyone had any recent experince of getting these maps?
Many thanks,
Paul Hudson
