Heroes & Villains: The Creation & Propagation of an Image

An interdisciplinary one-day conference at St. John’s College, Durham,
examining the creation and propagation of the image of heroes and
villains in Early Modern Europe.
Proposals are invited for a one-day interdisciplinary conference to be
held by the Durham Centre for 17c Studies in St John's College, Durham,
England, on 29 March 2003.
The conference will focus on the qualities that are most admired or
condemned in men and women in the early modern period, and the ways in
which the image of heroism or villainy is created and propagated. The
theme may be studied in relation to a wide range of contexts, including
literature, the visual arts, popular culture, political and religious
controversies, historiography and propaganda.
Graduate students are particularly encouraged to apply. Please send a
short abstract (up to 400 words) by 3 January 2003 to the organisers.
