medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Dear List,
I do not wish to dredge up the (sometimes acrimonious)
debate over Constable's response to a student's
question (I had found it objectionable for various
reasons). However I just read a review of Philippe
Buc's _The Dangers of Ritual: Between early Medieval
Texts and Social Scientific Theory_ and found this
opening phrase:
>I should start this review by insisting on the impact
>anthropology has had on medieval/early modern
European
>studies. Medieval anthropology has challenged the
>traditional, institutional, and even social
>historiography of the Middle Ages...
Buc apparently opposes this trend and the reviewer
apparently opposes Buc's attempt to "rescue us from
the satanic social-scientific grip."
Although I seem to have been shouted down, I still
maintain that a response to the question: "Were
medieval people as conflicted as people are today?"
(or words to that effect) should have been more
nuanced and should have taken into account recent
findings in anthropology and psychology.
If anyone wishes to see a copy of the entire review,
please contact me off-list. Caveat: it is quite
lengthy.
