To pay or not to pay for business information is a question that faces many

free with pay-as-you-go and subscription services and will examine quality
of content, coverage, functionality and price. There will be practical
sessions throughout the day.

Knowledge management: foundation programme
Speaker: Adrian Dale
Fee: 295.00 + VAT (346.63)
This one day course provides an introduction to the concepts and practice of
knowledge management. Knowledge management is a relatively new management
discipline that is developing rapidly in the marketplace and attracting much
hype and marketing attention. This course will demystify the field and
provide the basic grounding delegates need to work in the area. They will
be introduced to the language of knowledge management, the principles that
underpin it and its practical application across all sectors of the economy.

Managing successful projects
Speakers: Beryl Morris & Keith Bonson
Fee: 295.00 + VAT (346.63)
Increasingly, managers of information or library services are expected to
manage a variety of complex and multiple tasks. This can create problems of
deciding priorities, allocating time and resources, keeping different stages
of the work on track and motivating diverse and, often, virtual teams. This
one day workshop will help project managers and members of project teams to
plan and implement their projects effectively.

Maximising web presence
Speaker: Phil Bradley
Fee: 295.00 + VAT (346.63)
This one day course is for information managers who are responsible for the
production and maintenance of web pages - either for the external website or
the intranet, although the emphasis is on the external site. It is
specifically designed for managers who wish to increase the visibility of
their site on the World Wide Web. At the end of the day delegates should
have a clear understanding of managing both website design and content to
obtain a better ranking with search engines and improved design for users.

Planning an intranet taxonomy
Speaker: Stella Dextre Clark
Fee: 295.00 + VAT (346.63)
Not all taxonomies live up to the hype that heralds them. This one day
workshop offers the chance to look behind the scenes at how they work, and
compare notes with others who have faced challenges and opportunities
similar to your own. A range of options will be demonstrated, rather than
relying on any one software or methodology. Key issues of structure,
presentation and ways of satisfying diverse user needs will be covered; also
the need for planning the taxonomy to fit the whole cultural and technical
context. A variety of approaches and options will be explored, probing
their strengths and weaknesses.

Freedom of Information: accelerating effective action plans
Speakers: Paul Pedley, Martin Sanderson
Fee: 350.00 + VAT (411.25)
With public sector organisations facing the challenge of meeting the
statutory requirements of the Freedom of Information Act, which came into
force in November 2000, it is important that those involved understand the
Act and the requirements it makes of their organisations. This workshop
will highlight the key issues of the Act and give plenty of opportunities to
ask questions of the speakers. Delegates will work on selected issues in
small groups.
