We are currently doing our annual review of fees and charges, and at present
any videos/DVDs can only be borrowed by adults on their ticket, even if they
are children's videos. Part of the thinking to date has reflected that
* if children can borrow in their own right (however desirable this
is) items which become overdue beyond a week for whatever reason can lead to
a child - or more likely their parent/carer - speedily racking up at least
£4.40 in hire charges. This may in some cases lead to a parent refusing any
further loans for their children, so it could be counter-productive
* where children who are accompanied by their parents may in fact
select a video/DVD themselves, the parents are the ones who cough up the fee
anyway
So, noting children who want to and can spend their pocket money+ on video
hire, do you let children borrow U and PG videos on their own ticket? How
about over-12s (and here in Devon we can't easily differentiate; a child
moves to young person's ticket at 16) borrowing these and C12 videos?
What good news from this, and what problems and pitfalls? Any responses
gratefully received - I will summarise for the list.
