'JUST BUSINESS' E-MAIL UPDATE

'JUST BUSINESS' WEBSITE DEVELOPMENTS
Unfortunately this month there is very little to report on web development.
Most of our time this month has been spent trying to find funding from
charitable trusts for next years work and delivering outreach for teachers
and students.

RESOURCES
Xchanging the World
Twenty percent of the world's people consume 80% of its resources. The
Xchanging the World exhibition shows how the world trading system creates
such inequality. It explores how 'free' market economics theories create a
more inter-dependent global economy offering wealth to the winners and a
more precarious existence to the losers, in both poor countries of the
'South' and the rich industrialised 'North'. Using examples ranging from
flower growing in Kenya to tourism in Goa the exhibition shows how
export-orientated development touches everyday lives. It illustrates the
widening gap between haves and have-nots and the devastation of the
environment resulting from these strategies. The exhibition was produced
by RISC with support from Voluntary Services Overseas. It can be borrowed
from NEAD for free, with a small deposit fee, and consists of 25 laminated
A2 panels taking up about 25' of wall space. Contact Finbarr Carter for
more details on

An accompanying teaching pack with activities exploring trade issues is
also available from NEAD. (£12.95 + £2 p&p)

NEWS
World Trade
The World Bank's chief economist, Nicholas Stern, said yesterday that poor
countries should unilaterally dismantle their barriers to trade in
agriculture in spite of European and American hypocrisy. He also urged
India and China to play a strong leadership role in exposing the double
standards of the EU and US on trade. According to Mr. Stern, the welfare
gains to the developing world of removing its trade barriers would be worth
$116bn over the next 12 years against a $76bn gain if the developed world
dismantled its barriers to poor countries' imports.

UK'S ENVIRONMENTAL SHAME - according to a report by the OECD, Britain
still lags behind in key areas of pollution control, waste management,
prosecuting environmental criminals and protection of important wildlife
areas. Among the report's findings is that Britain uses twice as much
pesticide as other similar countries and 70% more fertiliser. The UK's
worst performance is in waste management, lagging well behind most European
countries. Britain's environment minister broadly agreed with the report's
conclusions.

NEW WEBSITES TO CHECK OUT
I recently informed you all about Oxfam's MAKE TRADE FAIR website. It has
been recently updated to include some excellent new case studies, exploring
the impact of dumping by the USA and the EU on real lives. The examples
include Bangladesh's garment workers, corn farmers in Mexico, fruit workers
in Chille, Prawn farmers in Vietnam and Columbian flower workers.

EVENTS
The Real Price of Cotton launch & Free INSET 25/03/03
Over the last two years 'Just Business' have been working closely with the
Earth Centre and Macdonald and Taylor (producers of organic cotton wool) to
develop an educational resource based on Macdonald and Taylor's knowledge
and experience of trying to bring an ethical approach to their global
business dealings. This has culminated in the production of 'The Real Price
of Cotton'.
To celebrate the publication of this teaching pack we are holding a INSET
and launch event, on 25th March 2003 at the Earth Centre. This event is
absolutely free due to support from MacDonald & Taylor and the Earth
Centre. Due to the limited number of spaces (50) we suggest you book early.

Just values - What happens when responsible business doesn't pay?
BT and Forum for the Future invite you to share your views.
Visit http://www.btplc.com/Betterworld/to participate in an email debate
that will ask such questions as:
* Should companies address social and environmental issues even when there
is no immediate business benefit?
* What lies beyond the 'business case' for sustainable development?
* Do businesses have moral obligations whatever the cost?
The two week email debate will run from Wednesday 4th December to Tuesday
17th December 2002 and will culminate in a live internet discussion with
Jonathon Porritt, Programme Director at Forum for the Future and Chris
Tuppen, Head of Sustainable Development and Corporate Accountability at BT.
To register as a participant and for further information, visit BT's
Better World website at http://www.btplc.com/Betterworld/
