Hi John,
Here are some classic social psyc and more current references on the
attitude literature that I used for my Social Psychology of Disability
course this semester. Unfortunately, I don't think many get into the broader
sociocultural issues on formation/maintenance, but see Hahn, 1988.
This book provides a review of older work, and Olkin's chapter summarizes
the literature as well:
Yuker, H.E. (1988). Attitudes toward persons with disabilities. NY:
Springer Publishing Company.
Classic studies:
Kleck, R. (1969). Physical stigma and task oriented interactions. Human
Relations, 22, 53-60.
Langer, E. J., Fiske, S., Taylor, S.E., & Chanowitz, B. (1976). Stigma,
staring, and discomfort: A novel-stimulus hypothesis. Journal of
Experimental Social Psychology, 12, 451-463.
New directions/research:
Antonak, R. F. Livneh, H. (2000). Measurement of attitudes towards persons
with disabilities. Disability and Rehabilitation, 22, 211-224.
Soeder, M. (1990). Prejudice or ambivalence? Attitudes toward persons with
disabilities. Disability, Handicap, and Society, 5, 227-241.
Makas, E. (1988). Positive attitudes toward disabled people: Disabled and
nondisabled persons’ perspectives. Journal of Social Issues, 44, 49-61.
Hahn, H. (1988). The politics of physical differences: Disability and
discrimination. Journal of Social Issues, 44, 39-47.
Olkin, R. (1999). The disability experience: Stereotypes and attitudes
(Chapter 3: pp. 54-75). What psychotherapists should know about disability
NY: Guilford.
Hope this helps.
