Portable Antiquities Scheme

Administrator; ICT Adviser; Finds Adviser and
Finds Liaison Officers (five posts)

Applications are invited for eight posts (all three-year contracts), funded in partnership with
the Heritage Lottery Fund and the Department for Culture, Media and Sport, as part of the
Portable Antiquities Scheme. The main aim of the Scheme is to advance our knowledge of
the history and archaeology of England and Wales by establishing a system for the voluntary
recording of finds of archaeological objects made by members of the public, including metal
detector users' and to increase opportunities for active public involvement in archaeology.
The data is published on www.finds.org.uk and is made available to the relevant Sites and
Monuments Record. A further 21 posts will be filled in two further batches in March and
July 2003, joining the 14 staff already in post. All post-holders will work closely with the
Head and Deputy Head of Portable Antiquities.

Administrator
You will contribute towards effective administration of the Portable Antiquities Scheme. The
post holder will check and collate grant claims based on figures provided by the offices of
the Finds Liaison Officers; arrange meetings and training courses for Finds Liaison Officers;
answer enquiries from the public; assist with the editing and distribution of the Annual
Report, newsletters and other publications. Resource, based at the British Museum.
Salary: Resource Band D: 15,000-21,700 (starting salary is usually at the lowest point of
the pay band).

ICT Adviser
You will project manage the development of the Portable Antiquities programme, train Finds
Liaison Officers in the use of it and develop guidance notes on it; oversee the transfer of data
to Sites and Monuments Records and the transfer of data and images to the Portable
Antiquities website (www.finds.org.uk); work with the Deputy Head to keep the website up to
date. British Museum. Salary: BM Band 5: 17,817-29,660 (subject to review).

Finds Adviser (prehistoric and Roman objects)
You will check records of relevant objects recorded by the Finds Liaison Officers for
consistency and accuracy and edit as necessary; train the Finds Liaison Officers in the
identification of prehistoric and Roman objects and provide expert advice on them as
required; and publish and research data, liaising with university departments. University

Finds Liaison Officers (five posts)
You will make contact with members of the public including metal-detector users; attend
club meetings; explain the aims of the Scheme and the Treasure Act through giving talks and
record finds on the Scheme database.

Staffordshire and West Midlands: Birmingham City Museum and Art Gallery and the
Potteries Museum, Stoke on Trent.
Salary: LG Scale 5, 16,944-18,582
Surrey (half-time post): Surrey County Council, Kingston upon Thames.
Salary: LG Scale 5, 16,944-18,582 (pro rata)
