There is a quick way to do this in NVIVO. After you have coded at the lower
branches of your hierarchical node, you open the search tool. You need to
do the search - Union - the boolean 'or'. In the search tool click on the
'boolean' button. Choose 'Union' from the drop down list of operators. As
you want to combine nodes, click the 'Choose Nodes' button. A window will
open. Double click the tree and select the node you want coded. Then click
on the 'sub-tree' button in the middle of the window. You will see that all
the codes under the code selected, all the way down the hierarchy, will
appear in the right hand window. Click OK. If you have version 2 you will
then go to the bottom of the window and click the Choose button to navigate
to the address of the node you want coded (in previous versions you have to
click OK to close this window, then go to the bottom third of the search
tool and click customise to choose the node you want the coding to go into).
Click OK and then run the Search and your higher order node will be coded.
(In N6 this operation is called Collect.)

Subject: hierarchical coding
I am looking for a qualitative analysis software that offers the
possibility to (1) organize the nodes hierarchically and (2) treat the
coded passages in a hierarchical manner i.e. the passages coded by nodes
on the lower level are automatically coded by the node on the superior
level as well. Nvivo which I have used so far contains feature (1) but
doesn't offer feature (2): In this program each node is regarded as
independent. The hierarchical order is a mere organizational feature for
the nodes.
Is there some other software package, that contains a real hierarchical
treating of the coded passages?
