medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Today (10. November) is the feast day of:
Leo the Great (d. 461) Leo was probably of Tuscan parentage, but born in
Rome. He rose in the Roman church and was in fact in Gaul mediating a
peace when messengers arrived to tell him he had been elected bishop of
Rome. Leo proceeded to become one of the very few "Great" popes. He
vigorously defended Rome in the chaotic years of the dissolution of the
western empire (either bribing or so impressing Attila the Hun that he
spared the city. He was less successful against the Vandal Genseric, who
sacked Rome for 14 days). On the theological front, Leo's statement of the
doctrine of Christ's incarnation was accepted at the Council of Chalcedon.
In terms of ecclesastical organization, Leo consolidated and increased the
influence and prestige of the papacy.
Aed Macbricc (d. 588) The Irish Aed (Aodh) was a member of the Ui Neill
clann. He was a physician, besides founding monasteries in Munster and
Meath, and becoming a bishop (with headquarters at Killare). There is
still an active pilgrimage to Slieve League (Donegal) where he is believed
to have been a hermit.
Justus (d. 627) Justus was one of the second band of Roman missionaries to
England, sent in 601. He became the first bishop of Rochester in 604 and
archbishop of Canterbury in 624.
John of Ratzeburg (d. 1066) John was from Ireland or Scotland. He went to
Germany, where he worked as a missionary on the eastern frontier. After
some years he was consecrated bishop of Ratzeburg, and became an active
missionary to the Slavonians. He was beheaded at Rethre in a pagan
reaction.
