medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Today (5. November) is the feast day of:
Elizabeth and Zachary (1st cent.) The parents of John the Baptist. Our
only source for E and Z is the first chapter of Luke's gospel. Eastern
tradition adds that Zachary was martyred in the Temple by command of Herod.
Bertila of Chelles (d. c. 705) A native of Soissons, Bertila became a nun
at Jouarre. There she won such a great reputation for humility and service
that when the king refounded the convent of Chelles and asked for model
nuns, B. was made the first abbess. She ruled Chelles for 50 years, during
which many important women of both France and England put themselves under
her direction.
Gerald of Beziers (d. 1123) Gerald was a canon regular who became bishop
of Beziers (southern France). He spent all his revenues caring for the
poor of his diocese.
