THE WALLACE COLLECTION
SEMINARS IN THE HISTORY OF COLLECTING
The Wallace Collection is planning to launch a series of regular seminars
as a forum for the presentation and discussion of new and current research
into the history of collections and collecting. The seminars will be open
to curators, academics, historians, archivists and all those with an
interest in the subject. It is envisaged that they will at first take
place approximately every two months.
The new seminar series is being established as part of the Wallace
Collection’s strong commitment to the research and study of the history of
collections and collecting, especially in the eighteenth and nineteenth
centuries in Paris and in London. Although we expect that the papers given
at seminars will to some extent reflect the main collection areas within
the Wallace Collection, we are keen to encourage contributions covering all
aspects of the history of collecting, including:
· Formation and dispersal of collections
· Dealers, auctioneers and the art market
· Collectors
· Museums
· Inventory work
· Research resources
Papers will generally be between 20 and 40 minutes long, with no more than
two papers normally being given during any seminar. Most seminars will
take place at the Wallace Collection, although we hope as part of the
programme to organise occasional presentations by this and other
institutions of their research resources for the history of collecting.
