Dennis
I'm all for beneficial discussions on the list. Its just that I'm not convinced that debates on, say, US gun laws, really falls into the original remit of HEN. I think the objectives of HEN are listed on the website -www.ukhen.org.uk - I don't want the list turning into a free for all on every single issue that individuals are concerned about.
I guess this also goes for your comment about Tony Blair, which is vague to say the least. If you think that the policies of the Blair Governmnet are improving or worsening health equity, then please feel free to try to stimulate some kind of rational discussion on the issue. But I think it would be helpful if you were a little more precise.
Kind regards

and why the USA is so different from the UK although Blair seems hell-bent on
remaking the UK into a US model. If that isn't about the UK, health or equity,
then I don't know what is.
Please try to restrain the urge to limit discussion. Certainly, I benefit in
Canada from UK discussions. research and findings. The least we can expect is
the converse!

Just a quick reminder that this is the listserve of the UK Health Equity
Network.
I might be wrong, but this doesn't seem to have much to do with the UK, health
or equity...

Right on, Alex. If you in the UK haven't heard, I would highly recommend
Michael Moore's film Bowling in Colombine. Looks at the guns & violence
issues and the media fear machine in the US. It illuminates some of the
reasons why the US is so different from Canada.

One in Four U.S. Adolescents Report Having Easy
Access to Alcohol or a Gun in Their Home
One quarter of U.S. adolescents report that they
have easy access to either alcohol or a gun in
their home, according to a national study of
adolescents in grades 7-12. Contrary to the
belief that it is more common for adolescents to
find alcohol than a gun, the study found that
in-home availability of alcohol or a gun are
similar (29% and 24%, respectively). Furthermore,
one in ten U.S. adolescents report having access
to both alcohol and a gun in their home.
According to the authors, "Given the risks
associated with the misuse of alcohol and guns
among adolescents, efforts to increase public
awareness of the availability of alcohol and guns
in the home are needed. Raising public awareness
of these issues, and making parents discuss them,
will be necessary in order to increase safe
storage practices of alcohol and guns" (p. 229).
