We are seeking a post-doctoral fellow or a PhD student to work on "the
kinematics, geochronology and tectonic significance of shear zones in
the Superior Boundary Zone in northern Manitoba, Canada"
The Superior Boundary Zone is a zone of collision between the Archean
Superior Province and the Proterozoic Trans-Hudson orogen. The initial
and main focus of the project will be structure (especially shear
zones). As the project progresses, one has the freedom to tackle any
other problems he/she finds interesting. The primary method of study is
detailed structural analysis in critical and well-exposed segments of
the shear zones, in combination with regional mapping (in collaboration
with geologists of Manitoba Geological Survey, Geological Survey of
Canada, University of Alberta, etc.). Detailed structural analysis (at
micro-, meso- and macroscopic scales) is necessary for working out the
strain geometry, kinematics and critical relationships, and regional
mapping will help to understand the shear zones in a regional context.
Selected samples will be dated by the U-Pb method (both TIMS and SHRIMP)
to constrain the ages of deformation, metamorphism, etc. The results of
the detailed study will be used to constrain the tectonic evolution of
the area, especially for the collision between the Superior craton and
the Trans-Hudson orogen, and for the uplift of the adjacent Pikwitonei
granulite domain. The project is field-based and the structures
concerned are well exposed.
The project is for 2-3 years for a post-doctoral fellow or 3-4 years for
a PhD candidate, with field work starting next summer. It is part of a
larger project being carried out by Manitoba Geological Survey, the
University of Manitoba and the University of Alberta, as well as the
University of Waterloo. The structural work will play a key role in the
entire project.
If you are interested, please e-mail your CV, including names and e-mail
addresses of three referees, to Shoufa Lin at the address below.
