There is an afternoon debate/seminar
taking place in London next month between
Roy Bhaskar, speaking from the critical realist tradition
and Alex Callinicos from the classical Marxist tradition.
The focus on materialism may be of interest to archaeologists.
Bhaskar has started to argue that materiality is undertheorised
in social theory, including marxist and historical materialist
social theory and is arguing for bringing it more coherently
into the ontological fold.
This echoes recent work by Michael Schiffer but from a
very different tradition.

assess what materialism means to Marx's work and to the various guises of
critical realism, including Roy's spiritual turn.
