medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Today (18. November) is the feast day of:
Plato of Ancyra (d. c. 305) Plato was a young Christian of Ancyra (Turkey)
who devoted himself to good deeds. He was decapitated in the Christian
persecution.
Mawes (Maudez) (5th cent.?) Mawes was a saint of one of the
Celtic-speaking lands---whether Cornwall, Wales, or Brittany isn't clear.
Perhaps the most likely is that M. was closely associated with St. Budoc,
and the pair of them were monks from Wales who founded monasteries in
Cornwall and Brittany. Mawes' cult was/is much more active in Brittany
than England or Wales. He is supposed to have settled with some disciples
on Ile Modez near the coast of Leon, and won a reputation as a great
teacher; he was also invoked against headaches, worms, and snake-bite.
Odo of Cluny (d. 942) Odo was born at Tours and brought up in the
household of William of Aquitaine. He became a canon of Tours, but
resigned to become a monk at Baume. Odo became head of the school at
Baume, and then abbot of Cluny in 927. It was Odo who obtained the papal
and royal charters granting Cluny immunity from all secular interference.
It was also Odo who began the process of turning Cluny into a great
monastic confederation; numerous monasteries were turned over to Odo for
reform in both France and Italy.
