medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
The cult of Alexander Nevsky is attested as early as in about 1280, under the Great Prince Vladimir. Vladimir's son Dimitry ensured creation of Alexander's vita, known in 15 medieval redactions.
Nevsky was especially loved by Peter the Great who in 1724 founded in St. Petersburg a huge monastery in Alexander's honour (Alexandro-Nevskaya Lavra) and had his relics translated there his burial place at Vladimir cathedral. Orthodox Church celebrates the saint on December 6.
Common opinion holds it that Alexander merited canonization for a very simple reason: not having surrendered to the Catholic Church (i.e., for the victory over the Teutonic Crusaders). . .

job using the threat of Mongol force to consolidate his own power. In the
process, he protected Christianity and encouraged its spread among the
Mongols. That's the only reason I can see for his purported sanctity.
Does anyone have more information?
i believe that he was canonized by Sergei Eisenstein, in the early 1920s,
wasn't he?
