medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
>Why do I include the saints I do? You might have noticed a strong
>German bias last year, when my preferred source was the quite
>amazing Bildlexikon der Heiligen (which has some of the most
>disgusting pictures I've ever seen in print). This year I tried to
>start with an Italian slant, but became frustrated with the sweet
>piety of the two Italian saints books I have, so I shifted over to
>Farmer's Oxford Dictionary of Saints as my #1 source, supplemented
>as necessary from a few other sources to make things a bit more
>international.
So I'm dealing with Farmer's bias, but even more importantly, I'm
trying to remain faithful to my charge from the list owners not to go
past the year 1550. As I understand the matter (I'm currently
teaching a course on Tudor/Stuart Britain for the first time, so I
have a lot to learn), there were no Irish martyrs to Anglicanism
until the reign of Elizabeth. And I confess that I know no good
source for Scots saints; I'd be happy to include them, if I knew
where to find them. Any suggestions?
