1.      THE PEDAGOGICAL RESEARCH FUND FOR LANGUAGES, LINGUISTICS AND AREA
STUDIES : CALL FOR PROPOSALS - deadline 15 November 2002

Introduction:
The Subject Centre for Languages, Linguistics and Area Studies has
funds to support a Pedagogical Research Fund for Languages,
Linguistics and Area Studies in Higher Education. The project is
managed at CILT by the CILT/Subject Centre Higher Education
Information Officer.  UK Higher Education Institutions are eligible
to apply for up to a maximum of £4000 to support a small-scale
project to commence 1 January 2003 and ending on 31 December 2003.
Projects are invited on one or more of the following key themes
related to teaching and learning:

 - diversity of student population/learner characteristics;
 - pedagogy/methodology;
 - multi/interdisciplinarity;
 - recruitment and retention;
 - policy development;
 - staff development and teacher training.

5.      MEETING, LAUNCH AND INVITATION to JOIN THE AREA STUDIES NETWORK
11 December 2002, CILT, Covent Garden, London

The Subject Centre for Languages, Linguistics and Area Studies is
launching its new Area Studies Network which aims to bring together
colleagues with an interest and expertise in the teaching of area-
related subjects. Our experience over the past few years has shown
that while Area Studies is a very diverse field encompassing a wide
range of disciplines and types of programme there are occasions when
it is of great benefit to network with colleagues across apparently
discrete Areas e.g. on issues such as marketing & recruitment, -
language learning, study abroad, multidisciplinarity, intercultural
competence, key skills and employability. So if you would like to be
involved in shaping our national support network for the learning and
teaching of Area Studies we invite you to join the Network and/or
attend the official launch and first annual meeting of the Network.

6.      PROGRESSION IN THE HUMANITIES - CILT, Lucy Cavendish College,
Cambridge 13 December 2002

The Subject Centre for Philosophy and Religious Studies is planning a
one day conference and workshop.  It will explore difficulties faced
by lecturers, tutors and planners in the humanities confronting the
need for clear programme specifications for progress, especially at
the following level transitions:

* 2 to 3 at undergraduate level, where students on honours courses in
smaller modules are often taught together in single seminars and
tutorial groups; * 3 to first year postgraduate, where, again,
pressures on resources can lead to classes being taught together.

7.      SUBJECT CENTRE WORKSHOP ON COMPUTER ASSISTED ASSESSMENT -
University of Strathclyde,Glasgow, Monday 27th January 2003.

This event will look at generic issues such as CAA pedagogy,
standards and interoperability, as well as specific issues and tools
for CAA in language learning. There will be demonstrations and
opportunity to try out tools currently available (Questionmark,
WELTS, Interactive Language Learning).

Speakers include:
Niall Sclater,  CETIS (centre for educational technology
interoperability standards) Assessment Group; William Haworth, WELTS
(Web Enhanced Language Testing System); Steve Cushion, Interactive
Language Learning and Online Assessment.

8.      SC WORKSHOP: INTERCULTURAL LEARNING AND THE ROLE OF VISUAL MEDIA
31 January, CILT, Covent Garden, London

The Subject Centre is looking for contributions to its forthcoming
event on the various uses of visual media - film television and other
visual representations --  in undergraduate teaching to promote
intercutural awareneness as part of a programme in area,
transnational or postnational studies. It will particularly explore
the inter-disciplinary interfaces between film, media and cultural
studies on the one hand and disciplines such as Geography, History
and Politics on the other. How can visual media help to develop an
understanding of cultural diversity, cultural difference and help
advance intercultural awareness? We are seeking short (15 - 20 min)
papers on aspects of this theme, ideally focussing upon examples of
classroom practice. Proposals to give papers should be submitted in
the form of a short abstract accompanied by brief details of the
context in which you are teaching, e.g. your dept/institution, areas
of expertise, subjects taught, together with your contact details.
The closing date for the receipt of abstracts is 22nd November 2002.

9.      NORTH WEST CENTRE FOR LINGUISTICS RESEARCH TRAINING PROGRAMMES
RESEARCH TRAINING NEEDS QUESTIONNAIRE

The NWCL currently runs a twice-yearly programme for postgraduate
students to complement the generic research training available at HE
institutions with linguistics specific programmes which contribute to
students' overall development as teachers and researchers in
linguistics.

The two programmes held in 2002 were attended by 90 students from 37
different HE institutions from throughout the UK. However, we are
aware that there are many more students of linguistics who may like
to take advantage of a programme such as this, and that our courses
may not be the ones that students/supervisors want or need. In order
to plan for the future, it is essential that we have complete
information about research training needs in linguistics.
Accordingly, we have devised a questionnaire for current PhD students
and MA students intending to embark on a PhD. We have also devised a
second questionnaire for staff teaching or supervising research
students. We would be very grateful if you and/or your students could
participate in our survey and help us to better address your needs.

10.     JCAL RESEARCH NOTES

The Journal of Computer Assisted Learning (JCAL) invites short
reports (c. 1000 words, including references)on research in progress,
for fast track publication.

JCAL will publish suitable contributions as soon as possible on the
journal Web site (http://www.lancs.ac.uk/users/ktru/jcaljrnl.htm)
together with a hot email address to the author.

Selected notes will be included in the printed version of the journal
when space is available.  Prior to publication in this mode,authors
will be sent proofs of the existing version with an invitation to
update the text in any way they choose (keeping to the same length).

Neither the Web page text nor any subsequent text in the journal
carry any formal copyright conditions.  Both the web pages and the
journal text carry an 'accepted' date.

Submissions should be sent via email (preferably as plain text) to
Andy Tolmie <[log in to unmask]>.

11.     LWULT LANGUAGES - Project Update

The first meeting for this LTSN Dissemination project has been
delayed, however a call for bids for up to six mini-projects (at
£3.5K each) in the area of less widely used and less taught (LWULT)
languages will be issued by the beginning of December. Projects could
be to develop virtual learning environments, online teaching
materials or show examples of collaboration in teaching delivery and
materials development. A preliminary meeting to discuss the shape of
the call for bids is being set up at the moment, if you would like to
