Just to let you know I've signed up to the list.
I work in intellectual disability services in Manchester as Head of
Development and Clinical Services. The Development bit is where I
do stuff most related to community psychology, mostly through
other colleagues who comprise a Quality, Research and Service
Development Team. I'm also a clinical psychologist who originally
trained as a psychological researcher - but I experience role
resistance in realtion to both these things (as well as my 'third
discipline - management!).
Beyond work (but with clear links to it) I've been smaking a
particular study of Latin American Community Social Psychology,
Psychology of Liberation, and the wider movement of liberatory
praxis. I want to use some of these ideas in realtion to work with
marginalised groups in places like Manchester.
I consider myself a Marxist and I am active in the Cuba Solidarity
Campaign, as well as less active in a variety of other campaigning
organisations broadly around themes of peace, poverty, human
rights.
I maintain the Community Psychology UK website - and invite you
all to conseider putting announcements, (and also potentially
reports and working papers there). We get some 20 hits a day
and the site comes up near the top on most searches for
community psychology.
Despite all this I see myself as a sympathetic but not always
convinced by community psychology - it lacks a very distinctive
approach and is often conceptually woolly. Nevertheless it is one
of the the best things that the problematic discipline of psychology
has thrown up and it is up to all of us to take it forward.
Looking forward to the discussion.
