What you mean like the "standard treatments" that they
taught us about at med school, or the "standard
wisdom" that was also taught. You know the sort of
thing every specialist thought his or her "thing" was
the most important for us to learn. Most of the stuff
we were taught was based on established practice and
very little hard evidence. All based on a model of
medicine that was a hundred years old and had not been
seriously challenged or thought about. My opinion on
ALS style teaching is based on a number of things.
Personal experience is one. The teaching I got in med
school was very poor apart from one or two
individuals. The teaching I have experienced on
courses is much better. Most of the teachers I had at
med school had a thorough grasp of their subjects,
they were just very bad at communicating it. For
example I was taught diabetes by a very renowned
expert who coincidentally is the current lead for
reforming emergency care. However it wasn't until I
got out into DGH's during clinical attachments that I
learnt anything about diabetes at all. The teaching
methods taught on GIC courses are at least evidence
based. Their is no evidence base for the sort of
teaching "skills" I experienced at med school. Do you
know of any papers that show that ritual humilation is
an effective teaching tool?
Cheers Fred.
