Subject: Accessing Identity seminar
Date: 03 October 2002 08:25
Tourism and Performance
Part of the ESRC-funded Seminar Programme entitled 'Accessing Identity'
Hosted by the
Department of Management, Keele University
Tuesday 5 November 2002
Aims
This seminar has two aims. The first is to discuss and explore academic
work which addresses, in some way, the relationship between the cultural
and material practices of tourism and performance. The connections between
these two sets of practices can be interpreted in a multifaceted fashion,
but they may include, inter alia, the use of theories of
performance/performativity
to articulate the nature of tourist activity in late Modernity, the
relationship
between nature and culture as they are constructed and experienced by
tourists,
the political economy of tourism and performance, or the embodied and
sensuous
nature of tourism. The second aim of the seminar is to create a dialogue
between academics working on performance and tourism and practitioners
employed either to research or conduct tourism.
Format
The seminar will comprise a number of keynote presentations during the
day. Speakers already confirmed include:
Tim Edensor (Staffordshire University)
Bronislaw Szerszynski (Lancaster University)
Alison Phipps (Glasgow University)
Hayden Lorimer (Aberdeen University)
Joyce Yeh (Lancaster University)
It will end with a panel discussion which aims to bring together and
explore
the issues that have been raised during the presentations. It is envisaged
that a significant amount of time will be given over to interaction,
participation
and discussion.
Location
The seminar will be held at Keele University campus near Newcastle-under-
Lyme,
Staffordshire. By car, Keele campus is around one hour south of Manchester
(junction 15, M6). From the MI come off at junction 23A and follow the
A50 to Stoke-on-Trent. The nearest train station is Stoke-on-Trent. For
