Jack,
I'd love to have a trainee but the nearest institution that offers a PGCE in
Economics is Worcester! Is it essential that school-based teacher training
has to happen in the same general area as the HE institution? Maybe a more
imaginative use of schools could be developed.

I recall that last May and June there was a lively discussion on the problem
of teacher shortages. At that time I was getting multiple daily calls from
schools desperate for someone for their business and economics department,
but by this time all my 50 trainee teachers already had job offers. This
year there are 57 keen, enthusiastic and able trainee teachers on my course
(from about 250 applicants). I could easily train more high quality
teachers, but the bottleneck that exists is schools' reluctance to have a
trainee teacher.
My message to school colleagues is that if you want the teachers in your
schools you will have to play your part in training them! I still have to
find one place for a teacher in North London, ideally in the Finchley-Mill
Hill-Hendon area. If anyone can accommodate a student teacher in his or her
department, please contact me off-list.
If you need to recruit a teacher, there is no better way than to have a
trainee. Over half of my student teachers found employment in a partnership
school.
