Hi there,
Our Theatre Company, C&T, are currently developing a new
Theatre-in-Education project for pre-school children. The project will
create an interactive online learning environment that will draw on
participatory drama techniques, creative play and puppetry. The aim is
through play to create characters, contexts and stories and then develop
these as learning tools through puppets, digital and flash animation
online.
We're looking to develop the project as an EU funded partnership, so if
anyone knows of anyone out there in the UK or Europe interested in this
sort of thing - please let me know!
Best wishes
Paul

In brief
Commencing in autumn 2003, the Theatre Company C&T plans to develop an
innovative new approach to participatory drama activities for the pre-school
age range. The approach will mix creative play, Online Distance Learning
Materials (particularly Virtual Learning Environments) and puppetry with the
educational pedagogy and methodologies of the drama practitioner, Augusto
Boal.
C&T will focus on the research and development of these learning resources and
related methodologies whilst partner university institutions will test these
materials with students and children and then evaluate the effectiveness of
these resources. The project will culminate with the dissemination of these
innovative practices through publications and international seminar/conference.
Background to C&T
C&T are one of the UK’s leading Theatre-in-Education companies, creating
participatory theatre projects mixing drama, learning and new media. Based at
University College Worcester the company works regularly in schools, colleges,
universities and with the Socially Excluded both in the UK and across Europe.
C&T is funded by the Arts Council of England, European Commission, and the UK’s
Department for Education and Skills. C&T is a Registered Charity.
The company has a reputation for creating innovative projects that enable
learning through a distinctive mix of Drama and Information Communication
Technology. This programme of work is often undertaken in partnership with
European universities.
The project
C&T wants to create an innovative participatory drama project through a mix of
creative play, puppetry and Online Distance Learning.
Through a central website we want to create a fictional learning context,
inhabited by characters and environments through which children can play and
learn. The site will use various digital animation techniques to create these
characters, contexts and encounters through which children can interact.
Children will be able to contribute ideas, stories and new directions, helping
to shape the drama as it unfolds.
However, this interaction is not dependent on a human/computer interface. Most
importantly, here, in the real world, children will use specially designed and
created toys to ‘animate’ the narratives and situations they have experienced
online. This process of animation will be facilitated by teachers/playworkers,
guiding children through the experience. The project will aim to draw on some
of Boal’s techniques, in this process of animation and facilitation,
particularly Forum Theatre.
Aims
1. To create a learning experience for pre-schoolchildren through an
innovative mix of creative play, process drama and puppetry and
2. To enable children to engage in this experience through live performance and
through an Online Distance Learning Materials.
3. To develop content that is relevant to children’s lives and cultural
experiences,
4. To use this practice as the basis for evaluation and research.
5. To disseminate the results of this practice `and research as widely as
possible.
6. To train others in the uses of these techniques and methodologies.
7. To work with children.
Partnership and Structure
C&T plans to apply for funding for the project from the European Commission as
a Minerva trans-national partnership. C&T has considerable experience of this
funding stream. As a consequence, we suggest working with university partners
in the following way.
1. C&T will take responsibility for the creation of the drama resources and ODL
materials. This will be undertaken by C&T and by commissioned artists, as
appropriate.
2. Once these materials have been created university partners can use them,
either with their students and/or in community or educational contexts
(nursery schools, crèches, etc).
3. University partners will be able to use these experiences to frame or
develop research activities, appropriate to their own interests.
4. Dissemination of this work can be undertaken by all partners.
5. If partners feel they can contribute something else to the project it would
be great to hear your ideas.
6. C&T will take responsibility for administering co-ordinating the project.
PLEASE NOTE THAT THE PROJECT DEADLINE IS 1st NOVEMBER SO WE NEED TO KNOW OF
YOUR POTENTIAL INTEREST AS SOON AS POSSIBLE
