'Right to Learn' events - November 2002
An invitation for you
Citylearning with the 'Right to Learn' Planning Group invite you and your
friends and colleagues to participate in a programme of activities designed
to offer support and advice and to raise awareness about learning and
disability.
I enclose a programme to give you an idea of the sorts of events and
information that local organisations have offered. Almost all the events are
free 'drop in' activities running throughout the day.
Please send your information to me
The planning group is keen that there is as much information as possible
available to those who drop in to the events, so I'd really appreciate it if
you could send me an information pack relevant to your organisation. Just
one copy of your material is fine, Citylearning can photocopy it for you.
Or, if you can spare multiple copies, please do send these. My address
details are given at the end of this letter. Please send any material that
you wish to be displayed at the information points at each venue by 1
November 2002.

disabilities, please do let them know about the programme.

'Right to Learn' events programme
Saturday 9th, Tuesday 12th, Wednesday13th,
Thursday14th and Saturday 16th November, 2002
The 'Right to Learn' group invite you to take part in a selection of free
events designed to offer support, information, guidance and to raise
awareness about learning and disability.
Where can I join in with events, seek advice or gather information?
Almost all of the events are designed so that you can just 'drop in'. You'll
find things going on at:
? The Age Concern Healthy Living Centre, Bradbury House, Porter Street,
Hull.
? Changes the Learning Shop, first floor, Princes Quay Shopping Centre,
Hull.
? the Central Library, ground floor, Albion Street, Hull.
? the Childrens' Centre, 70 Walker Street, Hull.
What is going on at each venue?
Lots! Take a look at the programme to see what interests you.
Each venue will have a staffed information point with all sorts of
information relating to disability and learning, from details on local
support groups to specific information from national organisations for the
disabled. There will also be people from the local groups involved to help
and advise you and members of the VOLCOM team visiting the four venues to
seek you views on learning.

Arts and family learning and disability information.
Where? Changes - The Learning Shop, Main Deck Princes Quay Shopping Centre
(next to River Island).
What's on? Art, craft and storytelling drop in activities for children,
parents and carers from 11.00 am - 3.00 p.m. Plus table-top information on
disability support groups and schemes and Learning Advisors on hand to help
you with any advice you may need on local learning opportunities. Internet
access and a cuppa will be available.
Access. The Learning Shop is on the first floor of the Princes Quay Shopping
Centre. There is full access for the disabled, both into the shopping centre
and into the Shop and both have disabled toilet facilities. Please note that
the Shop is 'open plan' and so at busy times it can be a little noisy.

coming along.
Tuesday 12 November 2002
Music for all and disability information.
Where? Changes - The Learning Shop, in partnership with Raw Elements and The
Music Service, Main Deck Princes Quay Shopping Centre (next to River
Island).
What's on? Your chance to have a go at making music using the Optima musical
instrument especially designed for disabled people. 'Drop in' and have a go
from 11.00 am - 3.00 p.m. Lee Pound will be giving demonstrations at 12
noon, 1 p.m. and 2 p.m. and there will be table top information on
disability support groups and schemes plus Learning Advisors on hand to help
you with any advice you may need on local learning opportunities or support.
Internet access and a cuppa will be available

Tuesday 12 November 2002
Healthy living for the 55+ year olds and disability information.
Where? Age Concern Healthy Living Centre, Bradbury House, Porter Street,
Hull.
What's on? A whole day of free 'drop in' activities organised by users of
the Healthy Living Centre from 10.00 am - 4.00 p.m. These include: an
introduction to computers by The Goole and District Coalition of Physical
Disabilities; The Falls project; stroke information from Stroke Watch;
healthy living information including nutrition demonstrations and safe
living demonstrations; the Ageing Well programme and free health checks.
There will also be demonstrations of reflexology plus visitors can take part
in craft classes, keep fit sessions and competitions. There will be plenty
of give-aways and prizes.
In the disability and learning information area on the first floor, you'll
find information from a range of local and national disability
organisations. There will also be staffed displays by the Royal Mencap
Society (Gateway Club information); Hull and East Riding Options (HEROS -
the gateway to health and social care for local people) and the Royal
National Institute for the Blind (RNIB),
Access: The Centre is fully accessible on all floors to those with
disabilities. There is a small car park at the rear of the Centre. Note: The
Cyber computer Café is in an open plan area on the ground floor which may
get a little noisy at busy times. The Centre is for those who are 55 years
old or over but Centre staff will welcome younger family members, friends or
carers who wish to accompany a 55+ years person to the 'fun day'.
Wednesday 13 November 2002
Support and advice on jobs, careers and learning for those with disabilities
and special needs.
Where? The Central Library (ground floor), Albion Street, Hull.
What's on? Displays staffed by experts on hand to providing advice and
support for those with disabilities, from 9.30 am - 5.00 p.m. Displays
include: the Library Service (and Clarity Transcription Service); Jobcentre
Plus (specialist support to disabled job-seekers, or disabled people already
in work and examples of equipment to support those moving from learning to
work); Action 4 Employment; the Cherry Tree Advice Centre (Computability
Scheme providing computer equipment and training to those with disabilities
in their own home); The Read, Write Plus Centre, CASE Training and others.
There will also be lots of table-top information on local and national
disability support groups and schemes.
If you can't make it on the 13th November, don't worry. Table-top
information and un-staffed stands (with details of who to contact) will also
be present on the ground floor of the Library on both the 12th and 14th of
November. Just pop in a collect what you need.
Wednesday 13 November 2002
Support for children and young people with disabilities and special needs.
Where? The Children's Centre, 70 Walker Street, Hull.
What's on? The event will run from 11.00 am to 3.00 p.m. and include
information stands with staff able to give advice about various types of
support for children and young people with disabilities and their families.
There will be displays and advice from The Children's Centre, KIDS-LINK
(supporting children aged 5 - 13 who have Special Educational Needs and
their families), The Cerebral Palsy Society and the Royal Mencap Society
(the Gateway Club offering social clubs running various activities). The
Hull University Student Union (HUSSO) will be there with information on its
Student Community Action programme which now includes over 50 projects - all
student led. One of HUSSO's main areas is working with children including
those with special needs. Also available will lots of table-top information
on local and national disability support groups and schemes, and artwork
from the Ability Group.
If you are interested in finding more about 'portage' (providing learning
support for children at home) the day will include a talk given by Ann Dixon
of KIDs.

Access: The Centre is fully accessible on all floors to those with
disabilities.
While you are visiting the Childrens' Centre, why not climb on board the BBC
Bus which will be outside of the Centre for the day and have a go on its
on-board computers? Perhaps you want to find out more about a disability
organisation? Why not use these free facilities to find the website and
print off details? There will be tutors on hand to help as required.
Access: The Bus is accessible to wheelchair users and has a keyboard for the
visually impaired. The Bus team is seeking to buy further equipment to
support learners with disabilities and would welcome your ideas on what is
required when you visit the bus.

Music workshop.
Where? The Abermarle Centre, Ferensway, Hull.
What's on? A music workshop facilitated by Changes - The Learning Shop for
students of CASE Training using Hull's new Indonesian community Gamelan.
Note: this activity is for CASE students only.
Thursday 14 November 2002
Training for care support workers.
Where? Victoria House, Victoria Dock, Hull.
What's on? A one-day Brain Gym® training session for care support workers at
Victoria House (a specialist care unit for adults with a variety of
disabilities). The workshop will help workers to explore Brain Gym® and how
it can offer a positive experience for their client group. Note: this
activity is for Victoria House workers only, however details on the Brain
Gym can be obtained from the information point at any of the other venues
listed.

Meeting special needs support in Higher Education.
Where? Changes - The Learning Shop, Main Deck Princes Quay Shopping Centre
(next to River Island).
What's on? A combined programme from 11.00 am - 3.00 p.m. for young people
16 years or older and parents and carers offered by Changes the Learning
Shop, the University of Hull Disability Service, the University of Hull
Learning Partnerships Office; and the University of Hull Centre for Lifelong
Learning. There will be advice on having your special needs met at
University and information on full and part-time courses, plus career paths
in Nursing and Social Work. Table-top information on local and national
disability support groups and schemes will also be available with Learning
Advisors on hand to help you with any advice you may need on local learning
opportunities. Internet access and a cuppa will be supplied.
