Marginally unfair. Not entirely speciality specific or sensitive- Dr Hawker
does fixed sessions out of hours (evening and weekend rounds on his week on
call) in a hospital where A and E consultants don't. There are also a few
orthopods, anaesthetists and paediatricians up and down the country who do
resident on call. The big difference is that A and E is the only speciality
where a consultant presence out of hours is viewed as a way of reducing
numbers of juniors rather than a way of improving the service.
