medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Dear List Members:
I would like to thank those of you who helped me to correctly identify the Jerome quotation that was wrongly attributed to Bernard in a sermon I am editing.
Now I have another one. In a vernacular penitential text appears the following quote, again attributed to St Bernard, and which I have not been able to find through the usual sources:
"Cum peccator accusatus fuerit et consciencia propria contra eum testimonium prohibuerit et omnis creatura dei insurrexerit contra eum in vindictam, grauis vt sagitta erit vox domini ad sustinendum."
Another quotation in this same text is attributed to St Eusebius, but again, its source has eluded me:
"Ve ve quibus est datum hoc prius sentire quam credere"
Veronica O'Mara, in a 1994 issue of the Medieval Sermon Studies, mentions this quotation, with the same attribution, in another text, and says she could not find the source either.
Does anyone recognize these quotations?
Thank you, Jill C. Havens
