Subject: ITT for a study on collections policy & metadata framework
INVITATION TO TENDER - please circulate widely
The Resource Discovery Network (RDN) and Learning and Teaching Support
Network (LTSN) wish to commission within a single contract two pieces of
work to underpin collaborative activity between RDN hubs and LTSN subject
centres:
- A collections policy
- A metadata framework to allow both organisations to describe pedagogic
content.
Overview
--------
JISC has made available funds to support partnership activity between the
two organisations. These funds will primarily be used to support metadata
sharing between the databases held by the RDN and those of the LTSN. The
purpose in sharing metadata is to reduce duplicated effort in the
description of web resources and support a significant group of users who
will use both services (tutors/lecturers).
We now require a consultant to carry out some preparatory work that will
inform our collaboration. This work is focused on two main areas:
- Examine the collections policies of the LTSN subject centres and RDN hubs
in order to better articulate the roles and responsibilities of the two
organisations, eradicate duplicated effort and achieve best value from the
investment of tax payers money in the two organisations.
- Examine the metadata requirements of LTSN centres and document where
these diverge from the RDN's metadata framework with the objective of
defining an agreed set of additional terms with which both organisations
can describe pedagogic content. This examination will need to take into
account work previously funded by JISC and others including the Metadata
for Education Group, the FAILTE project and IMS.
Further details of the partnership programme itself, the timetable for
submission of tenders, the work required and anticipated deliverables are
now available at:

Kind regards,
Simon
