Reusable learning objects in health professional education: from
theory into practice

Booking deadline: 9 January 2003
Date: 6 March 2003
Venue: LTSN-01, University of Newcastle
Booking deadline: 20 February 2003
Overview:
The aim of these workshops is to introduce participants to the
concept of reusable learning objects (RLOs) with a step-by-step
series of presentations and discussions that will show all the
stages and processes required to create the resources. There will
be background information, case studies of the processes involved
in creating and developing them and examples of how they are
used in practice. After a short briefing on the tasks required there
will be a breakout session where participants will, in small groups,
have hands-on experience of creating RLOs for themselves, guided
by the presenters. A single RLO will be selected (after discussion
and by consensual agreement) from the pool created on the day
and subsequently developed and put online to form a tangible
workshop outcome.
Topics to be covered:
* Context: why elearning? When is it appropriate?
* Introduction to and rationale behind the UCEL project
* What is an RLO? Metadata overview. Copyright and IPR issues.
* Educators share their experiences of creating RLOs
* Break-out group sessions – RLO development
* Fitness for purpose – RLO selection
* Future issues
Expected outcomes:
By the end of the workshop it is expected that participants will have
gained an understanding of what RLOs are and how they are
created and used. It is expected that there will be a tangible
outcome by the production of a single RLO developed from the pool
created on the day.
Who should attend:
Educators of health professionals, e-learning developers, anyone
interested in finding out more about RLO development
Programme:
0945 Coffee and registration
1000 Welcome and introductions. Background to the Universities’
Collaboration in Elearning (UCEL)
1015 Why Elearning? – context, content and examples
1030 What is an RLO? Discuss in pairs and provide definitions.
Other definitions. UCEL’s definition. Metadata.IPR issues.
1100 “Here’s one we made earlier” - educators’ tales of
RLO creation and the impact this has had on their practice. With
examples of the templates they used, the ideas they had, the
learning objectives they wanted to meet, the processes by which
they arrived at the finished RLO and the results and insights they
obtained. “5 top tips for painless RLO creation” offered.
1145 Short briefing on tasks for the afternoon session. Groups
assigned. Brainstorm in groups to devise learning objective to be
developed into RLO in afternoon session.
1215 Lunch and demonstrations of RLOs. Networking opportunity
1300 Break-out sessions. Small groups facilitated by
roving presenters. Participants will work on the learning objective
agreed on before lunch to develop into a learning object. RLO
templates (see attached) in the form of A0 laminated sheets with
non-permanent markers will be used by the group to create a RLO
specification. These AO sheets will be fixed on the walls to be
viewed and discussed by other groups.
1500 Presenters to facilitate discussion on the relative merits of
each specification for RLO development, in terms of fitness for
purpose, visual appeal, interactivity, reusability. RLOs are
compared and discussed. A single RLO is chosen (anonymously)
for development into online resource. (This is subsequently put
online and participants notified of URL by email.)
1530 Questions and answers. Implementation, technical and
future issues. Evaluation of workshop and feedback
1600 Close
