METS does not specify any standardized requirements for descriptive
metadata. It merely provides a mechanism by which desriptive metadata can
be added from a different namespace. DC is one of the possibilities. MODS
and MARCXML are others.

Yes, there are other initiatives to develop standards for other types of
metadata. See links under METS extenders on the METS page
(http://www.loc.gov/mets). There are technical metadata schemes for audio
and text that will be added to this list soon. It is the goal of the METS
community to establish "application profiles" to encourage the use of
particular extension schemes (to foster data exchange and
interoperability), while, at the same time, continuing to allow the
freedom for projects to develop their own extension schemas according to
their own special needs.
