With all the recent online map announcements on this list, us amateurs are
not to be outdone! I'm really pleased to announce the full return of the
Megalith Map as part of the bigger Megalithic Portal project. If you have a
web site featuring prehistoric archaeology in the UK or Ireland, you really
should consider linking to us to put your site in context, or add our news
feed to your site.
Originally created in 1997, and after a gap of 2 1/2 years since the last
update, the Megalith Map is back better than before, with live map plotting
of megalithic and other prehistoric sites in the UK and Ireland, no longer
just stone circles and rows.
Go to http://www.megalithic.co.uk and click on Map in the menu.
About 1500 new prehistoric site entries have been added to the database by
our Editor Vicky Morgan, bringing us up to about 5000 sites and monuments
listed all over the UK and Ireland.
Red dots indicate where we have one or more photos of the site, and where
there are a lot of sites listed you can zoom in by clicking on the map
background. Currently there are photos of over 600 individual sites, over
2000 images in total. Content is growing fast with contributions from our
users and team of expert editors. Help us turn all the dots red by
submitting your comments, or photos of sites we don't have by going to the
eGallery menu. Or e-mail them to [log in to unmask]
As well as our own text and contributed photos the individual site pages
provide true portal functionality, linking to the following other sources of
data (where available).
- Other ancient sites in the vicinity
- Multimap maps
- OS Landranger map sheet overview
- Aerial view from Getmapping
- DEFRA's MAGIC Map of Scheduled Monuments
- Countryside Agency 'Right to Roam' Maps
- Google Web Search for more text and images. If it exists on the web,
Google will find it!
We also have a prehistoric archaeology news service that you can display on
parsing an RSS/RDF file if you have a database driven site. Click on
EasyNews for more details.
Our site is entirely privately funded by sales of CD-ROMs, books and artwork
in the megalithic.co.uk shop, so please support our work. All p&p to
customers in the UK is no more than £1 until the end of August. Beat that!
