For redhat 7.1 what I have done elsewhere was to install
python2-2.1.1-2.i386.rpm
from
ftp://mirror.ac.uk/sites/ftp.redhat.com/pub/redhat/linux/7.2/en/os/i386/RedH
at/RPMS/
which worked if I remember correctly.
Also the one from http://datagrid.in2p3.fr/distribution/external/RPMS/
may also work as this is the one to be installed on a datagrid 6.2 release.

Yes there are so many upgrades to the 6.2 distribution that it is quite
a long way from a vanilla redhat 6.2 patched system.

No, AFAICT 7.1 still only shipped with python-1.5.2...

As well as all the python bits you need the GNU.LANG_gcc... RPMs out of
the appcommon collection, which fixes a lot of dependency failures.
