medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Today (19. August) is the feast day of:
Mochta (Mochuta) (5th cent.?) According to legend, Mochta was a native of
Britain who became a disciple of St. Patrick in Ireland. He is supposed to
have been educated and consecrated bishop in Rome. He founded a large
monastery in Louth. Tradition reports that he had 200 bishops as
disciples.
Credan (8th cent.) Credan is an obscure Anglo-Saxon saint, abbot of
Evesham in the time of Offa of Mercia. Nothing further is known of his
life, which made Archbishop Lanfranc and other Norman bishops suspicious.
In 1077 Credan's relics were subjected to an ordeal by fire. They emerged
unscathed, and in the following translation shone like gold.
Louis of Toulouse (d. 1297) Louis was the son of Charles II of Naples and
Princes Mary of Hungary, born in 1274. He spent seven years of his youth
as a hostage in Barcelona after his father had been taken prisoner in
battle with the king of Aragon. During this time, Louis fell under the
influence of the Franciscans. He renounced his claim to the kingdom of
Naples and entered the Franciscan order in Rome, and was ordained in 1297.
Boniface VIII consecrated Louis as bishop of Toulouse a few days later.
He lived a very pious and ascetic life during the very short time he was in
office, dying at the age of 23. Louis was canonized in 1317.
