On 25th July 1554 Mary I of England married Philip of Spain in what was to
be the last Royal Catholic wedding in Winchester Cathedral. Textiles and
dress played an important role in preparing the city and the principal
participants for the festivities, highlighting the points of unity and
difference between the two countries. Mary and Philipıs marriage proved to
be shortlived, while the interaction between England (Britain) and Spain has
been a long and complex one. In July 2004, the city of Winchester will
again celebrate the links between Spain and England through exhibitions and
other events, this time in the context of Europe as a political entity.
Via the medium of textiles, this conference will explore the intricate
relationships between the two countries over the last five hundred years,
investigating both the collaboration and conflict inherent in differences in
religious, political, economic, and social systems. New insights into the
dialogue between the cultures will be sought through analysis of the
material and visual culture of royal alliances, trade, tourism, collecting,
and the media: from consideration of the diffusion of textile technology to
the intimate connections between people, clothes and identity. It is
envisaged that one day will be devoted to the 16th century while the second
day will concentrate on the modern period, and encompass not only England
but also the rest of the British Isles.
The organisers, Dr Lesley Miller, Dr Maria Hayward, and Alison Carter (of
Hampshire Museum Service) invite participation from historians, curators,
conservators, archivists, and collectors. There will be keynote lectures
and a plenary session in addition to chaired papers. There will also be a
space available for poster presentations. Students are welcome. In keeping
with their objectives, the Centres anticipate that this conference will
result in the publication of a book for which all papers will be considered.
Names for mailing and proposals for papers in English or Castilian should be
sent to the conference administrator at the address below to arrive no later
than 31st May 2003. Papers will be 30 minutes in length. Proposals should
be submitted in electronic or hard copy, and should include the name,
affiliation (where appropriate), contact address, phone number and email of
the proposer plus a curriculum vitae and a 250 word abstract.
