italian-studies: Scholarly discussions in any field of Italian studies
Here, every language but Spanish has difficulties in enrolling students.
Here are several ways we have tried to attract students:
1. Poetry contests: Held at the college in the spring. In the fall all
local high schools are informed of the contest through department heads.
Students prepare a memorized poem or, at a high level, write a poem
which they submit. On the day of the contest, students are bused to the
college/university where each level performs and, while a panel of
judges decide upon awards for each level, students attend an appropriate
presentation: a well-known singer, for example, or performer in the
given language. Prizes are given, a rinfresco offered and students are
thrilled about having passed an afternoon away from school, and with
luck, are inspired to continue.
2. study-abroad programs: in the framework of a language requirement, an
intensive one-month to six week course in situ completes one semester of
the requirement. This includes housing WITH A FAMILY (required), week
end trips, etc.
3. We have a French week every fall and an Italian week every spring.
This year the theme is food and we are planning a rinfresco at the
library (!) for each of the weeks, with the friendly cooperation of the
library, which appreciates the advertizing too, since, with the advent
of the Internet, more students don't do research at the library.
Those are a few of the things in which I have participated and will be
participating. I'm sure many others have good ideas too. (I heard an
excellent presentation at the ACTFL by AATF members a few years ago,
including a mardi gras celebration on campus.)
I suggest too conferring with Classicists; they have wonderful Junior
Classical League events.
