I am currently concluding a third test pit excavation in relation to
silver/lead smelting in Combe Martin, North Devon during the 16th & 17th
centuries. The contexts of the third stage test pit suggest that smelting
may have been undertaken as early as the 12th/13th centuries.
I would be interested to discuss and compare excavation notes with anyone
who has undertaken the excavation of early water-powered smelt-mills for
silver/lead.
Kindest regards,
Trevor
