"The basis upon which the grades are allocated is
unknown. There is a very simple and easily understood
way round this: allocate grades according to standard
deviations above or below the average. Thus, no matter
how dumb the paper, and no matter what’s going on in
educational theory and practice at the time, an A
grade will clearly signify that the person holding it
managed to score a certain number of standard
deviations above the average for that year. What could
be simpler"

Would this be a good idea?
