Rather interesting response from Mike in Moray. Basically, if you don't
filter, children will find all sorts of nasties, either by accident or by
design and to cap it all you will be fired!

Experience here in Sheffield (so far) has shown that we have not had much of
a problem with kids accessing inappropriate material. Although our pre NOF
infrastructure is limited to 10 libraries, we have had very few problems and
we do not filter at all. We do have an acceptable use policy, and whilst
things have not been 100% problem free, we have been able to control
customers in an effective but light handed way.

Having said that, we are putting filtering on kids access in the PN set-up.
This will be generated by the users log-in determining the 'profile' they
will have delivered to the desktop. I'm not convinced it will be needed,
but I suppose we are playing safe. My basic instinct is to support
Michael's position, parental responsibility and education on what is
acceptable behaviour in a public place is the long term key to this issue.

Finally, having had unfiltered public access here of about 2 and half years,
I'm still gainfully employed!

To my knowledge, a number of library authorities have long allowed children
to access 'innapropriate' material (I use the term with considerable
unease). In the form of books libraries have plenty of stock which I would
not want to leave for my young child to access. Consequently I wouldn't
leave my child unattended in an area which I considered to have
'inappropriate' material. My feelings would be exactly the same regarding
use of the internet. My reponsibility as a parent remains the same.
Although this may not be a widely-held opinion, it does not affect my
belief in that basic principle.

Incidentally, I find it quite worrying that someone who put forward an idea
that was not to your liking would have to fear for their career? Remind me
not to seek employment at Moray Council.
