medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Dear Listmembers
The word "carena" (karena) is a "unit" of indulgence granted with a number
of days indulgence in some rubrics to prayers around 1500-1530. If I ever
looked it up have I forgotten the meaning again.
Can anybody please enlighten me about the meaning and origin of the word
(which mostly occurs in the Netherlands, but both in Latin and
Dutch/Flemish/Lower German.
Here is a rubric as example: "De pawes clemens heuet gemaeket dit
naghescreuen ghebet ofte benedixie ende heuet ghegheuen al den ghenen de
dat lesen hundert daghe aflates ende veet ende vijftich *karenen* ende hie
en sal niet ontsien de plage der pestilencien ...etc." (perhaps somebody
could tell if Dante used the term?)
(I'm stuck in my summerhouse as usual in July-August with 10 books - and no
large dictionaries, thus this abuse of your benevolence)
Thanks
Erik
