medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Two questions from a Bear-of-Little-Brain who would like to understand these things better...
1. Is it conceivable that these dates had no connection originally with the appropriated solar cycle - and that one or another or both (taking July 1 and 2 to be a doublet) predates the assignment of the nativities of Jesus and John to the solstices?
2. Since the protagonists in the Visitation episode are Mary and John the Baptist's mother, is it further conceivable that the Visitation feast has some relationship to an earlier focus on Mary or John as much as that on the child in Mary's womb?

not be anywhere near the nativity of John. Maybe the men who calculated
these dates were ignorant of biology or as numerically challenged as I am.
perhaps the date is the result of one of those Kinkie Typological Thingies
that the Middlevils were so fond of.
though, being Typologically Challenged myself, i can't think what it might
have been.
