medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Apropos Wilgefortis listed by Phyllis 20 July (the female saint who
apparently had some problems with her chromosomes) do I have a question
about a sculpture in Beauvais.
I just stumbled over her again by accident, in some old notes when
recording a litany from Beauvais (Paris BN Ms.lat.773). It appeared to come
from a "ecclesia sci stephani" in Beauvais, and I looked in my precious old
red Baedeker Guide (Nord-Ouest de la France, 1910), and found indeed a
eglise St-Etienne in Beauvais.
And guess what?
There is a *12th century sculpture* of Wilgefortis! (?), (she is mentioned
in the calendar on July 12th on line with "Hermagore epi", but not in any
of the missals from Beauvais published by Leroquais).
The Baedeker Guide says: "dans le bas coté de droite, une sainte crucifiee
a tete barbue (Ste Vilgeforte), du XIIe." Quite a surprise. Is does not
mention the material, which most probably is/was wood.
Either is the date in the Baedeker wrong, or her cult originated much
earlier than the 14th cent.
Anybody who can give some more accurate and up to date information about
the sculpture of the bearded sainte Vilgeforte in Beauvais?
Erik
