Construction of thesauri from faceted classification schemes
Wednesday 14th and Thursday 15th August 2002 at University College London
Overview
The course is intended for practising librarians, archivists and
information managers with a need to develop vocabulary management tools for
specific subject areas. This might be within a conventional documentation
context but is equally applicable to the organization of digital
information and the management of intranets. A general methodology for
thesaurus creation will be demonstrated, as well as the use of the Bliss
Bibliographic Classification 2nd edition (BC2) as a basis for the
construction of more sophisticated tools.
Prerequisites
No prior knowledge or technical skills are assumed for Day 1 of the course,
although it is likely that users will have some practical experience of
document/information management and are familiar with the issues attached
to subject organization. Day 2 is primarily aimed at those who are already
using BC2 as a classification and wish to apply it in new ways, or more
experienced indexers who have a need to develop large scale thesauri.
Provisional Programme
Wednesday 14th August Principles and structure of the thesaurus; compiling
a thesaurus for a specific subject area using facet analytical theory. The
day will focus on practical work in creating a thesaurus from a small
vocabulary, and will include: exploring general principles of term
organization to create a systematic display, conversion to alphabetic
display, methods of vocabulary control and the use of thesaural relations.
Thursday 15th August Conversion of the BC2 vocabularies to thesaural
format. This session will concentrate on the development of a complex
thesaurus from a large structured vocabulary, and the practical issues of
vocabulary management and editing associated with this.
Participants may attend Day 1, Day 2, or both. For those with limited
experience, Day 1 can act as an introduction to Day 2.
Course leader: Vanda Broughton, School of Library, Archive and Information
Studies, UCL, supported by members of the Bliss Classification Association
Cost: £100 per day (£50 per day for BCA members).
