Thanks to all of you who replied to my request on the history of
communications towers. The consensus in the offline replies I received was
that these facilities have not yet hit the radar screens of industrial
archaeologists.
One reason I made the query is the explosion in the US since 1996 of
wireless telecommunications facilities has apparently taken its toll on Cold
War historic properties (and other 20th century industrial sites). I suspect
the situation is not unique to the US. For an example of one such historic
property that has been adversely affected (in National Historic Preservation
Act terms) by a 2000-vintage tower, take a swing by the Western Union
Telegraph Company Tenley Tower case study page:

Now for the second request: Can anyone point me towards similarly impacted
properties?
DSR.
