I thank Matthew for being sensitive to the OTHER users of the HBSMR ..
as i am an other user

.. the NT has many liciences (to date 26) and has put alot of its own
money into developments. And is likely to continue to do so as long as
we use the system.

There are other users such as National Parks? and the National Trust for
Scotland, Scottish SMR's that are not apart of ALGAO .... I think it would
be a shame if these other users are ignored in the re-assessment of the
role of the group.

THANKS Matthew

My apologies to Paul if he feels that anything in my email was misleading.
This was certainly not my intention. There are approximately a dozen
users
of the HBSMR software who are not ALGAO members and I was trying
to be
sensitive to their interests - it is not always easy to strike the right
balance! As I said, ALGAO was instrumental in getting this project off the
ground and is fundamental to its continuing success. I used the word
"partnership" in its legal sense as ALGAO are not signatories to the
HBSMR
contract, but I have always considered that EH has been acting on
behalf of
the SMR community in this project and has been careful to reinvest all
income derived for the benefit of the users. I have also endeavoured to
raise the profile of ALGAO in the revised contract being negotiated with
exeGesIS. I have absolutely no interest in downplaying the role of
ALGAO!

The point that I was trying to make is that the primary purpose of the
group
is for users to communicate with the software developers and each
other
about software-related issues. To this extent I feel that its scope sets it
apart from the other groups, even if there are important and necessary
reporting structures in place. I agree that the majority of HBSMR users
are
ALGAO members, but development of the software is also funded by
English
Heritage, the non-ALGAO users of the software and exeGesIS itself as
part of
its product development.

I hope this clarifies my thinking.

I think Matthew's email on this is rather misleading and as someone who
was
involved the development of the HBSMR almost from the beginning, I'd like
to
try and put the record straight.

1. ALGAO were partners with EH and Exegesis in the development of
the
software, and SMR officers as ALGAO representatives were fully
involved in
its development.

2. Most members of the HBSMR User Group work for organisations that
are
members of ALGAO, organisations that fund the development through
buying
licences and support.

3. ALGAO also provide the chair and there is a regular item on the
ALGAO SMR
committee agenda so the chair can report back, alongside those
members of
the ALGAO SMR community who attend HBSMR Users Group.

Perhaps 'sub-group' is not the term to use but I can't think of an
alternative this late in the day! However, we should still recognise the
importance of ensuring good communication and clear relationships
between
all the various meetings as well as the importance of the ALGAO role as
representing many, if not most, user organisations.
