Ok, so maybe "impairment derived" was not exactly the right way of putting
it. My point was that people may argue that impairment is tied to the idea
of function/ability and thus that disabled would seem to many to be
embodied with the word ability, as least from the standpoint of base
language. And, as others have pointed out (and I happen to agree with much
of it) there are still problems with the term. But I assert here my right
at reclamation (for "disabled" was and is, in many ways a medicalized term)
in the same way that other communities have reclaimed Black, queer, etc.
Personally, I still bristle at the reclamation of "crip" that some claim,
but that's me. I didn't say anything about measurement.
