Freight on Board: Wheelchairs Deliver the Goods

GOMA, Congo, July 2 - Makeshift wheelchairs start lining up early at
the border station here. Some teeter under their loads. The owners of
the chairs do the steering but the power to navigate the rough roads
to the market comes from children, who are paid to push with all
their might.
"Come on!" said Makuta Vumilia, whose chair was carrying two 50-pound
bags of sorghum. Her 13-year-old son, Jean, was one of the pushers.
She called on him and two other young boys to keep her, her chair and
her valuable load moving toward the central market in Gisenyi,
Rwanda, just across Congo's eastern border.
