CALL FOR PANEL PARTICIPANTS
NEW ORLEANS 2003
The events of Sept. 11 have affected many of us who
teach about and conduct research in parts of the globe
that we call the non-west. The intensification of
American nationalist discourse in the western mass
media has created a need for critical geographical
pedagogies and research. At the same time, many of us
who have always looked critically at the role of the
west in creating and maintaining the 'non-west' have
found that students are now more resistant to critical
analyses. Similarly, the resurgence of nationalism has
created the need for venues beyond academia where
geographers may challenge western nationalist
discourses.
We are seeking participants for panels on post-Sept.
11 pedagogies, research, and communication beyond
academia to discuss strategies within and beyond the
classroom. The panels are sponsored by the Values,
Ethics and Justice subcommittee.
To participate, respond to Mary Curran
([log in to unmask]) or Sue Roberts
([log in to unmask]) by Aug. 15, indicating your area of
interest (pedagogies, research, communication).
