David,
I think you are looking for information that is too recent to be held
within the archaeological community, and still resides among the
current practitioners. A few years ago I did an impact assessment
consultancy on some mobile (your cellular) phone towers, and spent a
few days travelling around outback Australia with a small convoy of
Telecom engineers. In the course of driving all day and chatting
over a few beers at night, I learned more about the technology,
design and development of telecommunications towers than my mind
could hold. Ever since, whenever my mobile phone drops out, I
usually know why. I recommend you contact a few telecom companies
and ask to have a long talk with their oldest engineers.
>I am looking for sources on the history of telecommunications (microwave,
>cellular, PCS, etc.) towers. More specifically, I am looking for technical
>works on tower types and their development through the 20th century. There's
>an abundant literature on electricity transmission structures, but I have
>found little on the architectural and engineering history of antenna mount
>structures. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.
