Depending on where they live, some residents of British Columbia can expect
to live thirteen years longer than others in the province. This finding is
one of many important observations arising from the collection of maps
contained in the first British Columbia Health Atlas. Also included are maps
that describe characteristics of people who live in different regions of the
province, their health status, their use of health services, and other
factors that contribute to their health. An additional section builds on
analysis of data from the BC Linked Health Data set.
The atlas is published by the Centre for Health Services and Policy Research
at UBC and was created to stimulate discussion about the factors that
contribute to the health of British Columbians. It provides a baseline of
information on which future work will be built.
The British Columbia Health Atlas is available free of charge on cd-rom and
on the internet at http://health-atlas.chspr.ubc.ca. A printed version is
also available for $65. For more information, or to order a copy of the
atlas, please contact the Centre at [log in to unmask]
