Dear List
I have been asked by a colleague who is involved with a UK paediatric study the most valid way of measuring the education level of the mother of a child. So far two approaches have been suggested. The first is the actual qualification gained (e.g. O levels or GCSEs, A levels, First degree (e.g. BA, BSc), Higher degree (e.g. MA, PGCE), NVQ levels 1-3, GNVQ, NVQ levels 4-5, HNC, HND, No qualifications etc). The second is the age at which education was ceased (e.g. Under 16 years old, 16 to 18 years old, More than 18 years old). I would be grateful for any thoughts on which of these would be the best tool for measurement or to know of any other scale that may be more efficacious.
Best wishes
Richmal
